Jonathan Cohen

Jonathan C. Cohen, B.A., L.L.B. is licensed Canadian Attorney who practices intellectual property Law. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School (Toronto) and had previously practiced law exclusively in the field of intellectual property with the firm of Shapiro Cohen in Canada. Jonathan has lectured and written extensively both in Canada and internationally on various aspects of trade-mark law, including domain name issues.

 

Jonathan has concentrated a great deal of time on the domain name world since 1996. Having founded the Intellectual Property Constituency (IPC) and served as its first President at ICANN and then served on the Board of Directors of ICANN, and of CIRA, and on the IRT.
He has had a unique opportunity to be involved in international Internet governance and policy, UDRP, and new gTLDs from the ground up.
His client base is worldwide and ranges from small entrepreneurs to multi-national corporations in the entertainment, pharmaceutical, personal care, and electronic fields.

 

Jonathan has appeared as Counsel on numerous cases in the Federal Court of Canada and has appeared as Counsel in the Federal Court of Appeal and the Superior Court of Justice. He continues to handle many oppositions and court matters working with teams in the firm.

 

Jonathan belongs to many Intellectual Property organizations and has written and spoken around the world over the past 30 years. Among his Domain Name speaking engagements are a United Nations Conference, the Committee on Foreign Relations in New York City, the Canadian government and testimony before a U.S. Congressional Committee.

 

Recently, Jonathan was named as one of Canada’s Top Lawyers of 2012 by Martindale-Hubbell.
